Demonstrating and SHARING Learning Using Green Screen - CHALLENGE!

Today was the day!  Jonathan Wylie, a tech consultant at Grant Wood AEA, came to Keystone Elementary to help us create a video using a green screen.  We are so, so lucky to have Jonathan's support at Benton Community.  He is an expert and absolute genius in his field!  Today, I got to see Jonathan work with students instead of teachers for the first time.  In the past, my interactions with Jonathan have been me as the student.  He is a truly gifted teacher for both adults and students.  We all learned a lot today!

 If you are unfamiliar with what a green screen is, ask your first grader!  The most common example we think of is when we watch the weather, the meteorologist is using green screen technology.  If students wore green, their clothing would turn transparent.  Want to see what happens when you wear green in front of a green screen?  Click HERE to view a video of Lara Spencer from Good Morning America.  

Students have spent the last few weeks learning about weather.  They dove deep into research around different weather topics.  They wrote a fact list and shared their new learning in this video.  Students were able to choose the picture that was displayed behind them.  We had great conversations about the idea of copyright infringement and how to access photos we could use in the video.  

Students were part of every step in the process to create this video.  We used the app DoInk to record.  Mr. Wylie taught students how to add images and record.  He also brought cool pieces like a microphone for us to use.  He explained how to put video clips into iMovie to create one big video about weather.  He also taught students how to edit and add text to their video.

We also had a conversation about all of the fun students could have making videos at home!  Students came up with a large list of topics they could share about or videos they could create using their toys at home.  

CHALLENGE:
Have your child create a video at home.  The topic could be about ANYTHING. (No violence or guns, please.)  It doesn't have to be fancy or use a green screen.  Feel free to let your child use the camera app on your phone, iPad, Kindle, etc. if that is easiest for you.  Then, post the video to YouTube or email me the video.  There is a setting in YouTube that can make this private if you prefer.  At school, we usually use the "unlisted" option.  You could also post your video to Twitter using the hashtag #keyrocks or Instagram by tagging BCFirst.  We will see how many videos students create outside of school and then watch them as a class.  Please email me if you have any questions!
