Socktober - PLEASE READ

Socktober is a VHE first grade tradition that Mrs. Happel and I are bringing to first graders at Keystone Elementary.  The note below has some information about Socktober.  It will be coming home with your child tomorrow.  Please return the bottom portion of the note as soon as possible.  The best source of information about Socktober is probably the Kid President video I've posted below.  

On Friday, we met and the students set a goal of 1,000 pairs of socks and to collect at least one pair from of state in the United States. Last year, we were able to donate over 1,300 pairs of socks from 35 different states and 4 different countries to homeless in the area.  In order to achieve this, we’ll need your help spreading the word.  Please consider allowing your child to call, email, or write to relatives across the country to ask for their help.  Feel free to share our project on social media sites.  This has shown to make a dramatic difference in our outcome.  We request that whomever sends socks includes a note to students.  We've seen anything from well wishes, words of encouragement, reinterance of the importance of helping others, and information about the state or country the socks are coming from.  We share these notes with students and have made them into a scrapbook.  Socks may be mailed to Keystone Elementary.  When I ask my friends and family to mail socks, I'm going to offer convenient sites like Amazon, Wal-Mart, and Target as ways to mail socks directly to our school without having to shop and mail.

There are 600,000 people without a home on any given night in the United States.  This October, SoulPancake and Kid President want one million people to prove that even the smallest acts of love, like donating a pair of socks, can make a big difference in the lives of the homeless!  (http://soulpancake.com/socktober/)

Over the next few days, students will be working on promoting our Socktober project in a variety of ways.  Examples of student projects include the following:  video, newspaper article, Glogster, poster, flyer, mug design, t-shirt design, yard sign, bulletin board design, and VideoScribe story. 

The first graders are super excited to be leading this charge.  The conversation we’ve heard between them is truly joyful noise.  We will be collecting socks through the end of the month.  Students will be creating the items listed above and we will use these pieces to promote and share this project in the communities.  Only FIRST NAMES will be placed on the various student projects.  Please sign and return the form below giving us permission to share your student’s wonderful work.  We would like the form returned ASAP.  Please call or email your child’s teacher with any questions.  Keep checking our classroom blogs to see how your child is making a difference in the lives of many!
