Socktober Message - PLEASE READ

First graders have been working hard on putting the final touches on their Socktober projects and are excited to share each project with you.  We have received some socks from students, but haven't received any from outside the state of Iowa.  Every time there is an addition to the box, students ask where they came from and are anxious to get a few pairs to add to our map.  If you are able, please reach out to your friends and family (in and out of Iowa).  

I have included an email below that I send to my family and friends outside of Iowa.  Please feel free to copy and paste it into the body of an email, post to Facebook, or condense to 140 characters for a Twitter feed.  

Please let me know if you have any other ideas on how to share this project so we can make this a memorable experience for our first graders and help those in need.

Hello Family and Friends,

First graders at VHE are collecting socks to donate to a local homeless shelter.  The source of their inspiration was an email that I have included below this message.  They have launched a full-fledged campaign.  First graders created the note that was sent home with all students in the district, videos, posters, t-shirts, a coffee mug, ebooks, and even designed a key chain that was printed with a 3D printer.  

The students set a goal of collecting at least one pair of socks from every state in the US.  I need your help!  WE HAVE NOT RECEIVED SOCKS FROM ANYWHERE OUTSIDE OF IOWA YET.  Please consider sending one or more pairs of new socks to Van Horne Elementary.  We are using a website to show students where the socks are coming from.  The goal is that students will see the good that can come when social media is used in positive ways.  

Socks do not need to be in a package, but they do need to be new (new worn).  PLEASE include a short not of who you are, where you live, and how you got this message or are connected to someone at VHE.  

When we did this project last year, students' faces lit up every time we got a new pair of socks in the mail.  We took all of the letters and posted them in the hallway for all to read.  Keep those encouraging words coming!
