Math Stations

We were able to have math stations today!  We are building our measuring skills by measuring items hidden around the room with cubes.  We are also building our spatial awareness skills by building with shapes and putting together a puzzle.  Fact practice is something we will work on all year, so today we were working on quickly building and recognizing numbers in a ten frame.  Some of the students created their own designs using the shapes.  This provided us with the opportunity (Teachable Moment!)  to talk about symmetry.  This idea will come up often as we get into our topic about shapes and study butterflies!

Because we can't keep everything we build, I took pictures of these proud students' creations!

Our Daily 5 Award Winner today was.... Avery!

Many students are doing a fabulous job working hard during this portion of our day.  We've discussed at length that someone can take away the certificate but no one can touch the learning that your brain gains.  The knowledge is the real PRIZE!  Please keep having those conversations with your first grader that pushes him or her to stay intrinsically motivated!
